Cupping Therapy

in Mississauga

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. It is believed to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.

The cups are usually made of glass, bamboo or silicone and range in size from small to large. The therapist will heat the air inside the cup before placing it on your skin. This creates a vacuum effect that pulls the skin and underlying tissue up into the cup. The suction can be left in place for up to 10 minutes, depending on the type of cupping being used.

Cupping is thought to stimulate circulation by opening up the lymphatic system and allowing toxins to be released from the body. It also helps increase blood flow to an area, which can reduce pain and inflammation. Cupping can also help relax tight muscles and improve flexibility in areas where there is tension or stiffness.

Cupping can be used as part of an overall treatment plan for various conditions such as back pain, neck pain, IT band issues. It can also be used to treat specific areas such as shoulders or hips that are tight or sore due to overuse or injury. As of recently, cupping has enjoyed much publicity due to use by professional athletes, in particular swimmers and track and field athletes. Cupping can result in markings which can last for 3-10 days.  The localized painless skin discolouration or “Ecchymosis” is the result of increased vasodilation.

Overall, cupping is a safe and effective form of alternative medicine that has been used for centuries to treat various ailments. While it may not work for every condition, it may be worth trying if you are looking for relief from chronic pain or tension without resorting to medications or surgery.
